Expecting Parent

Your oral health has a significant effect on the oral health of your child. If the primary caregiver has cavity causing bacteria in their mouth, their child is more likely to develop cavities. It is recommended to have a dental cleaning and checkup in your second trimester to ensure you are in good oral health. Imagine Children’s Dentistry is here for questions during your pregnancy and we will continue to support you and your child as they grow.

0 - 1 Year

Congratulations! Once a tooth erupts (usually around 6 months) begin to use a rice grain sized amount of fluoridated toothpaste to brush. You should schedule their first visit to the dentist by the time they are a year old or within 6 months of a tooth erupting.

2 - 3 Years

50% of kids come to the dentist for the first time because of trauma between the ages of 2-3 years old. This is because they are exploring their environment and accidents happen. We are here for those little falls and to provide support for you during those first visits.

4 - 7 Years

At this age children can begin to start trying to brush independently with your guidance and supervision. A good indication they are ready for independent brushing is their ability to tie their own shoelaces and use a fork and knife. Even though they can begin to brush their teeth independently, you should be putting a pea-sized amount of fluoridated toothpaste on their brush for them. Now is also a good time for the parent to start flossing for them.

8 - 12 Years

Your little one isn’t so little anymore! We will assess your child’s growth and development and refer to an orthodontist as needed. We are here to support kids as they begin to make their own choices and independently manage their oral health.

12+ Years

The last of the baby teeth are usually lost by twelve years old and they will get their remaining permanent teeth. It is important you encourage them to continue making time for oral care even with their busy schedules. We are here to help encourage good dietary habits as your child begins to make their own nutritional choices. Watch for increased consumption of sports drinks and pop as these are some of the main causes of cavities in this age group.

Special Needs

Pediatric dentists receive specific training to work with those with special needs. When you make your appointment, let us know of any unique health care needs we should be aware of so we can personalize treatment for the best possible experience. Dr. Faulkner and her team have extensive experience with special needs patients and we will work together with you to make your dental visit a positive one.

Dental Trauma

Dental trauma is a broken tooth or an oral injury. We know accidents happen and we will make time to help when you need us most.

If an adult tooth falls out hold the tooth by the crown (not the root) and re-implant the tooth in the child’s mouth immediately. Call our office or go to the nearest hospital.

If a baby tooth falls out, do not re-implant the tooth and call our office to book an appointment.

If a tooth breaks put the broken piece in water so it doesn’t dry out and be sure to bring the broken piece with you to our office.

Preparing your child for their first visit to the dentist?

We've prepared a fun storybook to help them understand what's to be expected.

You can flip though the digital story and read it with them so they are prepared.
